WARNING CANTALOUPE RECALL - DEATHS BEING REPORTED

WARNING CANTALOUPE RECALL

Sundia Cantaloupe Recalled Due to Salmonella

 A melon farm in Colorado has issued a recall of cantaloupe following a Listeria outbreak that has killed at least two people, sickened 22 and spread to several states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the deaths from the outbreak were reported in Colorado and New Mexico, and state health departments said more deaths could be confirmed once testing comes back.  {Info from, Washington Post}

They think that at least 17 states have received contaminated cantaloupe!

There have been at least 22 listeriosis cases reported in seven of those states, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Many of those cases were in New Mexico.

Jensen Farms, of Holly, Colo., voluntarily issued a recall of its cantaloupe Wednesday after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment advised people to avoid eating cantaloupe from the Rocky Ford area because of the listeria outbreak.
At least 10 New Mexicans were hospitalized with a listeriosis infection in the last three weeks, and four people died from the infection as of Thursday afternoon, said Dr. Paul Ettestad, an epidemiologist for the New Mexico Department of Health.
None of the people with a listeriosis infection were from San Juan County.
{Info From, The Daily Times. }

WHAT IS LISTERIOSIS
Listeriosis is a bacterial infection usually caused by eating contaminated foods, Ettestad said.
The listeria bacteria can be found in soil, animal excrement, food processing plants or delivery trucks, he said.
It is likely the cantaloupes have the listeria bacteria on their rinds and the bacteria seeps into the melon through a crack or when the fruit is sliced, he said.
The infection does not affect everyone who is exposed to listeria. Some people get gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting. The infection can spread to the blood stream and people can develop life-threatening meningitis or encephalitis, he said.
The safe bet is to throw away all Rocky Ford cantaloupes from that farm purchased from Walmart or Whole Foods.
{My personal recommendation is don't eat any cantaloupe from any stores for a while.}

One Death, 76 Illnesses Linked To Ground Turkey

One Death, 76 Illnesses Linked To Ground Turkey

Federal officials say one person has died from salmonella poisoning that appears to be linked to eating ground turkey, but the government so far has declined to say who produced the meat or initiate a recall.

Seventy-six people in 26 states have been made sick from the same strain of the disease, which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics. The CDC did not say where the person who died became sick and released no details about the death.

The illnesses date back to March, and the CDC said Monday that cultures of ground turkey from four retail locations between March 7 and June 27 showed salmonella contamination. The agency said preliminary information showed that three of the samples have been linked to the same production establishment but did not name the retailers or the manufacturers.

Food safety advocate Bill Marler, an attorney who has represented victims of the nation's biggest food-borne illness outbreaks, said he believes the three positive samples should prompt a recall.

"Consumers have no idea what to do except not eat ground turkey," he said.

The illnesses are spread all over the country. The states with the highest number sickened were
Michigan and Ohio, 10 illnesses each, while nine illnesses were reported in Texas. Illinois had seven, California six and Pennsylvania five.

The remaining states have between one and three reported illnesses linked to the outbreak,

The CDC said 26 states were affected but only listed 25 states in which illnesses were reported in a news release issued Monday evening.

THIS INFO CAME FROM CHANNEL 8 NEWS

THANK YOU CHANNEL 8!

"I personally think they need to recall this!  I know I don't want my family becoming sick and I don't want a child or elderly person that can't handle much to die from such a thing."

Chrysler recalls 26,000 vehicles for fire risk

Chrysler recalls 26,000 vehicles for fire risk

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Chrysler is recalling over 26,000 vehicles to inspect and repair power steering systems that could cause a fire.
The recall covers 2010 model year cars and trucks including the Chrysler 300 and Sebring, as well as Dodge models such as the Avenger, Challenger and Journey. It also applies to the 2011 Dodge Ram.
In a letter to federal safety regulators, Chrysler said some of these vehicles may have a break in the power steering mechanism that could allow fluid to leak out onto the engine and ignite.
The Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company said dealers will check the recalled vehicles and make necessary repairs free of charge. The recall, which covers 26,397 vehicles, will begin this month, the automaker said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating gas tanks on a estimated 3 million older Jeep Grand Cherokees that could pose a fire danger, although a recall has not been issued.
Chrysler, which makes Jeep, maintains that the gas tanks on Grand Cherokees made between 1993 and 2004 are safe.

Texas food plant linked to bacterium, state says!

Authorities in Texas,  "they have ordered a San Antonio plant to stop processing food and recall all products it shipped this year after tests showed the presence of a bacterium in chopped celery from the plant.

The tests found the presence of a bacterium that can cause illness in chopped celery from Sangar Fresh Produce of San Antonio, the Texas Department of State Health Services said in a statement.

The tests were part of an investigation into 10 cases involving the bacterium; those cases included five deaths in eight months, the department said. Six of the 10 cases have been linked to chopped celery from Sangar Fresh Produce, it said in a statement.

The company's president, Kenneth Sanquist, disputed the state's findings. "The state's claim that some of our produce now fails to meet health standards directly contradicts independent testing that was conducted on the same products," he said in a statement.
"This independent testing shows our produce to be absolutely safe, and we are aggressively fighting the state's erroneous findings."

"I personally would NOT eat this, I mean it's not worth it, why they argue with each other about who's right people could die."

WARNING BEETLES FOUND IN BABY FORMULA!!!
You read that right, Bugs!

Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories recalled about 5 million containers of Similac powdered formula on Wednesday as a precaution after small beetles or their larvae were found in a section of an Abbott plant in Sturgis, Mich. Two consumers also reported contamination, according to media reports.
The recall affects powdered Similac in plastic containers and in cans that are size 8 ounces, 12.4 ounces and 12.9 ounces.
No liquid formula sold by Similac was affected by the recall.
Abbott spokeswoman Melissa Brotz told Reuters that after the problem was identified, all product on the Michigan factory line was tested, and 99.8 percent tested negative for contamination. She said the type of beetle discovered is common in in houses, office buildings and grocery stores.
Abbott said it has been working closely with the Food and Drug Administration, which has “determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat.”
Refusal to eat? No kidding. "ya think"
Bring your formula back to the store, where you got it.
 I heard this story on CNN, but got this story from Healthy Living.
